Getting Around Chicago and The Suburbs This Weekend and Beyond

It is no secret that Chicago is one of the most vibrant cities in the country. Its bustling downtown and charming suburbs offer residents the perfect balance of community, culture, and comfort.

Plus, getting around Chicago and its ‘burbs is easier than ever. This weekend, and throughout the next few weeks, keep in mind the following information regarding traffic, commuting, hockey, and more.

Friday, December 8th

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is taking measures to keep traffic running smoothly during the reopening process for the Kennedy Expressway, which had been closed for nine months due to bridge refurbishment.

Mandated overnight lane and ramp closures have been put in place between Montrose and Ohio. For the safety of all drivers, these closures will remain in effect until the morning commute of December 12th. At least one inbound lane will be open at all times.

Saturday, December 9th

On Saturday night, head to the United Center to watch the Hawks battle it out against the St. Louis Blues at 7 pm. This Midwest Showdown is sure to please.

Sunday, December 10th

The Chicago Bears take the field at Soldier Field on Sunday afternoon. Fans can use the #128 Soldier Field Express bus to get to the game from any downtown Metra station. This service will be running from 11 am to 4 pm.

For those looking to hop on the Metra to get around the city, keep in mind that two lines have been impacted due to a tunnel refurbishment project near the Clybourn Station. Access to Platform #1 has been blocked until the end of the month, though commuters can still access the platform through the Ashland Avenue stairwell entrance.

End the night cheering for the Blackhawks during a 6 pm game against the Anaheim Ducks.

Further Down the Road

IDOT has announced that, weather permitting, all four inbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway between Montrose and Ohio will be open by the morning commute of December 12th. Quick thinking commuters will be able to take advantage of these lanes without repair crews until the Spring of 2018.

Hopefully, this brief overview has given you a better idea of what to expect regarding traffic and transportation within Chicago and the suburbs this weekend and beyond. Stay safe and stay informed so you can make the most of your time in the Windy City!
