“: The Power of a Single Word in Spanish”

Salud, a Spanish term for “health,” is more than just a word. It is a way of life, a mindset, and a community. And for Neil Gajare, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, Salud has been a life-changing experience.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, first joined Salud during his freshman year. As a pre-med student, he was drawn to the organization’s mission of promoting health and wellness among underserved communities. But little did he know, Salud would have a profound impact on his personal and academic journey.
Through Salud, Neil was able to participate in various health outreach programs, both locally and internationally. He recalls his first medical mission trip to Honduras, where he and his fellow Salud members provided medical care to rural communities in need. “It was a humbling experience to see the gratitude and appreciation from the people we helped,” Neil shares. “It made me realize the privilege and responsibility that comes with being in the medical field.”
Aside from the medical aspect, Salud also focuses on promoting overall well-being through education and awareness. Neil has been actively involved in organizing health fairs and workshops in Philadelphia, where he and his team provide free health screenings and information on healthy living. “It’s fulfilling to see how our efforts are making a positive impact on the community,” Neil says. “And it’s a great way to bridge the gap between the university and the local community.”
But Salud is more than just a platform for community service. It is a tight-knit community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for health and service. “I have made some of my closest friends through Salud,” Neil says with a smile. “We have a strong support system within the organization, and it’s amazing to see how we all come together for a common cause.”
However, what truly sets Salud apart is its commitment to diversity and inclusion. The organization welcomes students from all backgrounds and cultures, creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone. “As an Indian-American, I have faced instances of discrimination and prejudice in the past,” Neil shares. “But at Salud, I have never felt out of place. The organization celebrates diversity and promotes cultural understanding, which is something I deeply appreciate.”
Unfortunately, not everyone shares the same values as Salud. In recent years, there has been a rise in Anti-Semitic incidents on college campuses, including UPenn. But Neil and his fellow Salud members have been actively involved in raising awareness and promoting tolerance and acceptance. “We cannot let hate and discrimination divide us,” Neil says firmly. “Salud has taught me the importance of standing up against injustice and promoting unity and understanding.”
Salud has not only made a positive impact on Neil‘s life, but it has also helped him grow academically. Through the organization, he has been able to network with healthcare professionals and gain valuable experience in the field. “Salud has given me the opportunity to apply my knowledge and skills in a real-world setting,” Neil explains. “It has also helped me develop leadership and teamwork skills, which will be valuable in my future career.”
Neil‘s positive experiences with Salud have inspired him to take on a leadership role in the organization. He currently serves as the President of Salud, where he hopes to continue the organization’s mission and make a lasting impact. “I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences Salud has given me,” Neil says. “And I am determined to pay it forward and help others have the same positive experiences.”
In conclusion, Salud is more than just a student organization. It is a community of passionate individuals who are making a difference in the world. And for Neil Gajare, Salud has been a life-changing experience that has shaped him into a compassionate, driven, and inclusive individual. As he looks towards his future in the medical field, Neil is grateful for the lessons and memories he has gained through Salud. And he encourages others to join the organization and be a part of this positive and empowering community.
