The Chicago Bears are gearing up for the 2024 season and one thing is clear – they need another pass rusher. General Manager Ryan Poles understands this need but wants to give the current group a chance to prove themselves before adding another veteran to the defensive line.
At the Bears’ training camp, Poles made it clear that it is the front office’s responsibility to consider all options to improve the team. However, he also expressed confidence in the players currently on the roster and is excited to see how they will develop under the guidance of defensive line coach Travis Smith and defensive coordinator Eric Washington.
The Bears suffered a blow in free agency when defensive tackle Justin Jones signed with the Arizona Cardinals. They also lost defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who remains unsigned. In response, the Bears made some minor moves by signing Jacob Martin and drafting Austin Booker in the fifth round. But without Ngakoue or a similar replacement, the defensive end room is lacking depth behind Pro Bowler Montez Sweat.
Despite this, Poles remains optimistic and does not see it as a major issue. He believes in constantly striving to make each position group the best it can be, and is relying on Smith and Washington to continue developing the current players on the roster. Poles also pointed out that the true test will come when the team puts on pads and plays in full contact, but he is encouraged by what he saw during OTAs.
Re-signing Ngakoue would make a lot of sense for the Bears. He is familiar with the team’s defensive scheme and showed promise before suffering an injury last season. The Bears’ athletic staff has been involved in his rehabilitation and Poles believes that Ngakoue’s impact on the team last season was evident in the increased sack rate for all players. Poles also praised Ngakoue’s leadership qualities, making it clear that the team enjoyed working with him.
However, Poles also understands the importance of staying within budget and will only make a move if the price is right. While the Bears will continue to keep an eye on potential additions to the defensive line, Poles will wait for the prices to fall within his desired range before making a move.
For now, the Bears are counting on Walker, Booker, and Martin to step up and provide the much-needed pass-rushing ability alongside Sweat. If they are unable to do so, the Bears’ defense, which has been on the rise in recent years, may face obstacles in reaching their desired heights.
