87-year-old suburban dance instructor fatally struck by car remembered as ‘energy ball’

An 87-year-old man and dance instructor in suburban Buffalo Grove was tragically killed on Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle. Roman Mazur, known to his loved ones as an “energy ball,” was a beloved member of the community and will be deeply missed.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Buffalo Grove Road and Larraway Drive, where Mazur was out for his daily jog. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle involved is cooperating with authorities, but no further details have been released at this time.

Mazur and his wife, Tatyana, immigrated to the United States from Kyiv in the late 1990s and quickly made a name for themselves in the dance community. Together, they founded Mazurdance, a studio located in Buffalo Grove. Mazur’s great-niece, Maria Khrakovsky, shared that he had been dancing since he was 25 years old and was deeply passionate about his craft.

But dancing was not the only thing that Mazur was passionate about. He was also dedicated to maintaining his physical health and would often go for daily jogs of up to four miles. He kept meticulous notes of his blood pressure and always made sure to take care of his body. This dedication to his health is just one of the many ways that Mazur inspired those around him.

Mazur’s legacy extends far beyond his immediate family and friends. Tatyana shared that he had colleagues and friends all over the world, in places like the United States, Israel, Ukraine, and Europe. He was truly the center of their community and his presence will be deeply missed.

As the news of Mazur’s passing spread, the dance studio he and his wife founded was filled with memories and mementos of his life. Closets were filled with Ukrainian and Russian ballet pieces that he had collected over the years, each one holding a special meaning and story.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, the dance studio will continue to honor Mazur’s memory. Classes will be held for the rest of the week, giving his students and colleagues a chance to come together and pay their respects. Mazur’s services will be held on Friday, where he will be remembered for his passion, his energy, and his impact on the dance community.

Roman Mazur was more than just a dance instructor. He was a pillar of strength, a source of inspiration, and a beloved member of the community. His legacy will live on through the memories he has left behind and the lives he has touched. As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate his life and the incredible impact he had on those around him. Rest in peace, Roman Mazur.
