Robbie Gould praises ‘culture’ at St. Viator as he takes coaching job

Former Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould has officially taken over as the head coach for the St. Viator High School football team. On Thursday, Gould met with the media at the school to discuss his vision for the Lions and his excitement for the upcoming season.

Gould, who recently parted ways with Rolling Meadows High School in pursuit of the St. Viator job, described the decision as incredibly tough. He also expressed his fondness for Rolling Meadows, where he began his high school coaching career.

“It’s never easy because I believe these kids are very impressionable. I also think it’s a group of kids who have worked really hard,” Gould said. “I developed a lot of relationships with those kids and helped them with their recruitment and grades, which are things I strongly believe in.”

During his one season at Rolling Meadows, Gould led the team to a 5-5 record and helped them qualify for the IHSA state playoffs. Now, he hopes to replicate that success with the St. Viator Lions, who finished with a 4-5 record last season and missed the playoffs for the first time in three years.

When asked about his reasons for pursuing the St. Viator job, Gould cited the school’s culture and competitive spirit. He also expressed his enthusiasm for helping players both on and off the field.

“I just love the culture here. Everyone works together for the greater good of the athletes and students in this school,” Gould said. “As a high school football coach, it’s all about developing and being there for the players on their journey. I think it’s unique what St. Viator has been able to create and accomplish.”

Gould is no stranger to the big stage, having played in the NFL for 18 seasons, including a successful stint with the Chicago Bears. St. Viator has also produced several NFL players, including current Bears tight end Cole Kmet. However, Gould’s focus is not on the individual achievements of players, but rather on establishing a winning culture at St. Viator.

“We won’t be in pads every single day. I don’t believe in that,” Gould said. “But I do believe in working hard, practicing like you play, and having each other’s back. It’s about playing for a brotherhood.”

Last season, St. Viator finished in third place in the Chicago Catholic League standings, with Benet Academy and DePaul finishing ahead of them in the purple division. The Lions started the season strong with three consecutive wins but then suffered five consecutive losses, ultimately falling out of playoff contention.

With Gould at the helm, the Lions are looking to bounce back and make a strong statement in the upcoming season. His experience and success in the NFL, combined with his passion for developing players and creating a winning culture, make him a valuable addition to the St. Viator football program.

The entire St. Viator community is excited to welcome Robbie Gould and looks forward to seeing the Lions roar on the field under his leadership. Let’s go Lions!
