In Huambo, Bailundo receives a new solar power plant with a capacity of 7,992 MWdc July 1, 2024 in News

The Solar Energy Production Plant will benefit over 51,023 inhabitants from the localities of the Bailundo municipality in the Huambo province. The Minister of Energy and Water will visit today, December 12, the municipalities of Bailundo, Ecunha, and Huambo as part of his agenda in the southern part of the country.

On Tuesday, December 12, the ceremony of consignment and the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of the Solar Photovoltaic Plant in Bailundo took place, with a capacity of 7,992 MWdc, as part of the Angola 2025 Plan. This plan, established by the Angolan government, aims to increase the electrification rate by utilizing ecological energy sources, providing cheaper and cleaner energy for local homes and businesses, and facilitating the transition from irregular electricity generated by fossil fuels to continuous energy.

The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, accompanied by the Provincial Governor, Notti Nolika, the King of Bailundo, Chiongolola Chongonga, and senior officials from MINEA, the energy sector, DNEER, PRODEL, ENDE, and the local government. The signing of the Consignment Agreement was carried out by senior officials from the companies PRODEL and MCA, representing the Angolan government, with the participation of the President of the Board of Directors of PRODEL, Pedro Eduardo Afonso, assisted by Haillé Arrissandro Vieira Dias Ferrão and by the MCA consortium – Manuel Couto Alves, the contractor for the project.

During the event, the minister emphasized the priority of the President of the Republic, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, to ensure that more Angolan families have access to clean and affordable energy, with the goal of reaching 70% of the National Energy Matrix with renewable energy sources by 2027, improving the quality of life for Angolans still without access to the national public energy grid. The project, with an estimated budget of EUR 20,271,445.00, is expected to be completed within three months from the contract signing, with the installation of 15,600 solar panels, forecasting savings of approximately EUR 6,117,409.32 and the creation of 50 direct jobs.

At the end of the ceremony, the minister and his delegation visited the project site and then traveled to the municipality of Ecunha to assess the progress of electrification works.
