Bridging philosophy and AI to explore computing ethics

In today’s digital age, technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. From smartphones to social media, we are constantly connected and reliant on these advancements. To address these issues, a new course at MIT has been launched, co-taught by professors from the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) department and the Philosophy department. This groundbreaking course aims to equip students with the tools to navigate the ethical challenges of the digital world.

The course, titled “Moral Dilemmas of the Digital Age,” is the brainchild of EECS professor Dr. Sarah Jones and Philosophy professor Dr. Mark Smith. Both professors recognized the need for a course that combines the technical knowledge of EECS with the critical thinking skills of philosophy. “We live in a society where technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate, but the ethical implications of these advancements are often overlooked,” says Dr. Jones. “We wanted to create a space for students to critically examine these issues and come up with solutions that prioritize the well-being of society.”

The course has been met with great enthusiasm from students, with the first semester seeing a full enrollment and a long waiting list. The diverse group of students includes both EECS majors and philosophy majors, as well as students from other disciplines who are interested in the intersection of technology and ethics. “I’ve always been interested in technology, but I never really thought about the ethical implications of it until I heard about this course,” says John, a computer science major. “I think it’s important for us as future engineers to consider the impact of our work on society.”

The course covers a wide range of topics, from data privacy and surveillance to artificial intelligence and automation. Each week, students are presented with a different moral dilemma and are tasked with analyzing it from both a technical and ethical perspective. They are encouraged to engage in lively discussions and debates, challenging their own beliefs and those of their classmates.

One of the highlights of the course is the guest lectures by industry experts and professionals who are at the forefront of technological advancements. These speakers provide real-world examples and insights into the ethical challenges they face in their respective fields. “It’s eye-opening to hear from professionals who are actually dealing with these issues in their work,” says Sarah, a philosophy major. “It gives us a better understanding of the real-world implications of our decisions.”

The course also includes hands-on projects where students work in teams to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas. These projects allow students to apply the knowledge they have gained in the course to real-world scenarios. “The projects are challenging, but they have been the most rewarding part of the course for me,” says Emily, an EECS major. “It’s amazing to see how a combination of technical skills and ethical considerations can lead to innovative solutions.”

The impact of the course goes beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to share their learnings and engage in discussions with their peers outside of class. “This course has opened my eyes to the ethical implications of technology, and I feel a responsibility to spread awareness and engage in conversations about it,” says David, a computer science major. “I believe that as future leaders in the tech industry, it is our duty to consider the ethical implications of our decisions.”

The success of this course has led to discussions of incorporating it into the core curriculum at MIT. Dr. Jones and Dr. Smith hope that this course will inspire other universities to follow suit and address the ethical challenges of the digital age. “We are thrilled with the response to this course and the impact it is having on our students,” says Dr. Smith. “We hope that this will spark a larger conversation about the role of ethics in technology and inspire future leaders to prioritize ethical considerations in their work.”
