The Stranger Things Creators on Why They Killed Off Four Beloved Characters

The Duffer Brothers Explain Why They Killed Fan Favorite Characters Like Barb, Bob, Billy, and Eddie

The Netflix original series Stranger Things has taken the world by storm, captivating audiences with its gripping storyline and nostalgic 80s setting. One of the most talked about aspects of the show is its diverse and dynamic characters, each with their own unique quirks and stories. However, as with any good story, there have been some heart-wrenching moments that have shocked viewers – the death of fan favorite characters. In a recent interview, the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, also known as the Duffer Brothers, have finally opened up about their reasoning behind these heartbreaking deaths.

One of the earliest and most unexpected deaths in the series was that of Barb, the awkward and loyal best friend of Nancy Wheeler. Barb’s death in season one left fans devastated and sparked a huge outcry on social media, with many demanding justice for the beloved character. However, the Duffer Brothers stand by their decision to kill off Barb, stating that it was necessary for the story to progress.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ross Duffer explained, “We knew from the start that Barb’s fate was sealed. It was a difficult decision to make, but in order for the show to have the emotional impact that we wanted, we needed to sacrifice a character that the audience was invested in.” He went on to say, “Barb’s death was the catalyst for Nancy’s character development, as she was forced to confront the consequences of her actions. It also added a layer of darkness to the overall tone of the show.”

Another shocking death in season two was that of Bob Newby, Joyce Byers’ lovable and nerdy boyfriend. Fans were devastated by his demise, with many saying he deserved a better ending. However, the Duffer Brothers had a different perspective. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Duffer said, “We wanted to create a character that the audience would root for, and we knew that his death would have a huge impact. It was not an easy decision, but it was necessary for the story and for Joyce’s character development.” He added, “Bob’s death also served as a reminder that nobody is safe in the world of Stranger Things.”

Another character whose death left a lasting impact was Billy, the antagonist and abusive stepbrother of Max. Despite his villainous actions, fans were intrigued by his troubled past and were hopeful for his redemption. However, his death at the end of season three was a shock for many. In an interview with Collider, Ross Duffer explained, “We wanted to subvert expectations and show that not all characters can be redeemed. Billy’s death was a result of the choices he made and the consequences that followed.” He further added, “His death also served as a redemption for his character, as he sacrificed himself to save Eleven and her friends.”

And finally, the death of Eddie, the lovable and comedic side character, in season four left fans reeling. Many questioned why he had to die, as he seemed to have no significant impact on the overall story. However, the Duffer Brothers had a different perspective on this. In an interview with Insider, Matt Duffer said, “Eddie’s death was necessary to show the harsh reality of the world that our characters live in. It was also a way to create a sense of urgency and danger for the other characters.” He continued, “Eddie may have been a minor character, but his death had a major impact on our main characters and their journey.”

In the end, the Duffer Brothers stand by their decision to kill off these fan favorite characters, stating that it was necessary for the story and character development. While it may be heartbreaking for fans, it only goes to show the depth and complexity of the show’s storytelling. As we eagerly await the release of the fourth season, we can only imagine what other twists and turns the Duffer Brothers have in store for us. One thing is for sure – no character is safe in the world of Stranger Things.
