Slime, Battleship and Trivial Pursuit join the Toy Hall of Fame

In a world filled with ever-changing technology and modern gadgets, sometimes it’s the simplest things that capture our imagination and bring us hours of joy. This sentiment was clearly evident on Thursday as the National Toy Hall of Fame welcomed three new inductees, including the beloved homemade plaything, slime.

The hall, which boasts over 70 iconic toys such as Barbie and LEGO, recognized the timeless appeal and enduring popularity of slime, along with two other esteemed games – Battleship and Trivial Pursuit.

Slime, with its gooey and sticky texture, has been a go-to for children and adults alike since the 1970s. What started as a simple homemade concoction using household items such as glue and Borax has evolved into a multi-million dollar industry with various versions and variations available in the market. Its tactile nature and endless possibilities of stretching, squishing and molding have made it a staple in classrooms, playrooms, and YouTube videos.

But what sets slime apart from other toys is its ability to be completely customizable and personalizable. With a variety of colors, scents, and add-ins like glitter and foam beads, slime can be tailored to fit anyone’s preferences and creativity. It not only encourages imaginative play but also provides a unique sensory experience that can be both therapeutic and entertaining.

The inclusion of Battleship and Trivial Pursuit in the hall of fame is also a testament to their enduring appeal and influence in the world of games. Battleship, a strategic game of naval warfare, has been a staple in households since its release in 1967. It has stood the test of time and continues to be a favorite among players of all ages, with its simple yet engaging gameplay.

On the other hand, Trivial Pursuit, with its challenging questions and categories, has been a brain-exercising pastime for trivia enthusiasts since the 1980s. It has become a cultural phenomenon, with various editions and versions featuring topics from pop culture to specific regions.

The National Toy Hall of Fame, which is housed in The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, has been recognizing and celebrating toys that have “inspired discovery and creativity” for more than two decades. Each year, a panel of experts selects the inductees based on their iconic status, longevity, and ability to promote learning and development through play.

The three newly inducted toys have joined the ranks of other beloved toys that have been deemed culturally, socially, and historically significant. They will be on display at the Hall of Fame, alongside previous inductees such as the hula hoop, jigsaw puzzle, and G.I. Joe.

The recognition of slime, Battleship, and Trivial Pursuit is not only a celebration of their individual success but also a reminder of the enduring power of play. In a world where we are constantly bombarded with screens and technology, these toys have proven that simple and traditional play can still capture our hearts and minds.

So, whether you’re making your own slime at home, strategizing your next move in Battleship, or testing your knowledge with Trivial Pursuit, take a moment to appreciate the joy and wonder these toys bring to our lives. Congratulations to the three new inductees – slime, Battleship, and Trivial Pursuit – welcome to the National Toy Hall of Fame!
