Nebraska Huskers legend James Green is known for his work ethic and dedication to superiority. He announced his retirement from professional wrestling on April 8, 2022. He then took up the role of the developmental coach for Team USA. This year in August, he joined the Nebraska Huskers as an assistant coach. However, the true satiety of a champion lies in performing on the court. And James Green is no different.
The hunger for those loud cheers on the court seemed to have become even more irresistible for Green with the arrival of the Olympic year. Therefore, leaving the scar of hip surgery behind, he is dreaming big once again.
James Green Resilient Return to Olympics Post Hip Surgery
Recently, the six-time world team member for Team USA is aiming to head back to the competition mat once again. After coming back from his retirement, four-time All-American, James Green is now aspiring to compete for the Olympic and World teams. According to FloWrestling, Green is planning to compete at the Olympic Trials.
A silver medallist at the 2017 World Championships, Green took to voluntary retirement in 2022 owing to hip injuries throughout his career. However, undergoing a partial hip replacement, he is ready to focus on wrestling. He adds, “To not be hurting, I’m telling you I could cry every day just to leave practice and feel good and go home and not complain to my wife about my hip,” Green remarked about his surgery. Indeed, he is very enthusiastic, calling it a second lease on life.
Lately, in most of the matches, the hip injury overpowered his wrestling prowess. Unable to fire shots like before, he had taken to adopt a style to avoid aggravating the pain. But, with the surgery, he is out of retirement, headed towards the Olympics. And he has the support of his resume for aspiring to that.
Besides earning a magnificent triumph at the 2017, 2015, 2013, and 2012 World Championships, James Green also clinched the 2014 Big Ten Championship title. Apart from achieving several accolades, James Green has also had the honor of becoming the four-time NCAA All-American in Nebraska. However, that is an ounce of doubt.
Can Green make the cut?
Green has shown his best in the 70kg category. Weighing around 153 pounds currently, historically, his Olympic record at 65 kg hasn’t been very promising. However, Green is now ready to give it a shot. Brock Hardy, a U23 World bronze medalist, has his take on it.

Hardy remarked, “He’s wrestled 70 kilos, and he’s always great at 70 kilos, but 65 is a tough cut.. he seems focused and he seems poised to make a run.” However, Green is fired up, to cut weight, and make his mark at the Olympics.
