For Donald Trump, Promises Are Easy; Governing Is Hard

On some of his biggest pledges, Trump shows no signs of progress

Since taking office in January 2017, President Donald Trump has made numerous promises to the American people. From building a wall along the US-Mexico border to repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, Trump has made bold pledges that have captured the attention of the nation. However, as we approach the end of his first term, it is clear that on some of his biggest pledges, Trump has shown no signs of progress.

One of Trump’s most controversial and talked-about pledges was his promise to build a wall along the southern border of the United States. He claimed that this wall would not only stop illegal immigration, but also reduce crime and drug trafficking. However, nearly four years into his presidency, the wall remains incomplete and has faced numerous setbacks. Despite declaring a national emergency in order to secure funding for the wall, Trump has only managed to build a fraction of the promised structure. In fact, much of the wall that has been built is simply replacing existing barriers. This lack of progress on one of his biggest campaign promises has left many Americans feeling disappointed and disillusioned.

Another major pledge that Trump has failed to make progress on is his promise to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Trump has long criticized the healthcare law and vowed to replace it with a better and more affordable alternative. However, despite having a Republican majority in both the House and the Senate during his first two years in office, Trump was unable to pass any significant healthcare legislation. In fact, his attempts to repeal and replace Obamacare were met with strong opposition and ultimately failed. As a result, the Affordable Care Act remains in place and millions of Americans continue to rely on it for their healthcare coverage.

In addition to these two major pledges, Trump has also fallen short on other promises such as bringing back manufacturing jobs and renegotiating trade deals. While he has touted the success of his economic policies, the reality is that the manufacturing sector has not seen the significant growth that Trump promised. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the manufacturing industry has actually lost jobs since Trump took office. Furthermore, while Trump has renegotiated some trade deals, such as the USMCA, his trade war with China has had negative effects on the American economy and has not resulted in the promised benefits.

So why has Trump shown no signs of progress on some of his biggest pledges? One reason could be the constant turmoil and chaos within his administration. Trump has had a high turnover rate among his staff, with many key positions remaining vacant for extended periods of time. This lack of stability and continuity has made it difficult for Trump to effectively implement his policies and follow through on his promises.

Another factor could be the strong opposition that Trump has faced from Democrats and even some members of his own party. With a divided Congress, it has been challenging for Trump to pass legislation and make significant changes. This has been especially evident in his attempts to repeal and replace Obamacare, where even members of his own party were not on board with his proposed plans.

Despite the lack of progress on some of his biggest pledges, Trump continues to maintain a strong base of supporters who believe in his vision for America. And while his presidency has been marked by controversy and division, there have been some successes, such as the strong economy and the confirmation of conservative judges to the Supreme Court. However, as we approach the 2020 election, it is clear that Trump will need to make significant progress on his promises in order to secure another term in office.

In conclusion, while President Trump has made bold and ambitious pledges, he has shown no signs of progress on some of his biggest promises. From the wall to healthcare to trade deals, Trump has faced numerous challenges and setbacks in his attempts to fulfill his campaign pledges. As we look towards the future, it remains to be seen if Trump will be able to make significant progress on these issues and deliver on his promises to the American people.
