Returning to Iraq to Bury My Brothers

Nadia Murad Returns to Iraq to Say Goodbye to Her Brothers, Elias and Jalo, Killed by ISIS 11 Years Ago

It has been nearly 11 years since Nadia Murad lost her beloved brothers, Elias and Jalo, to the brutal hands of ISIS. The pain and grief of their loss has never left her, but she has found the strength to carry on and become a powerful advocate for the Yazidi community and all victims of genocide and sexual violence.

Recently, Nadia made a courageous decision to return to her homeland of Iraq to say goodbye to her brothers and pay her respects to their memory. It was a journey filled with mixed emotions, but one that she knew she needed to make.

Nadia’s brothers, Elias and Jalo, were just two of the thousands of Yazidi men who were brutally killed by ISIS in 2007. The terrorist group targeted the Yazidi community, a religious minority in Iraq, and carried out a campaign of genocide and sexual violence against them. Nadia and her family were among the lucky few who were able to escape and seek refuge in other countries.

Since then, Nadia has become a powerful voice for the Yazidi community and all victims of genocide and sexual violence. She has shared her own harrowing experience of being captured and enslaved by ISIS, and has tirelessly advocated for justice and recognition for the atrocities committed against her people.

But despite her strength and resilience, Nadia has never forgotten her brothers and the pain of their loss. She has always longed to return to Iraq and visit their graves, but the ongoing conflict and instability in the region made it impossible for her to do so.

However, with the recent defeat of ISIS in Iraq, Nadia saw an opportunity to finally make the journey back to her homeland. With the help of the Yazidi community and the Iraqi government, she was able to safely return to her village of Kocho, where her brothers were buried.

The journey was an emotional one for Nadia, as she walked through the streets of her village and visited the graves of her brothers. She was surrounded by the memories of her childhood and the happy times she shared with her family before the horrors of ISIS tore them apart.

But despite the pain, Nadia found solace in being able to say goodbye to her brothers and honor their memory. She also took the opportunity to visit other Yazidi mass graves and pay her respects to the thousands of innocent lives lost to the hands of ISIS.

Nadia’s return to Iraq also served as a powerful message to the world. It showed that despite the unimaginable suffering and loss, the Yazidi community and other victims of genocide and sexual violence will not be silenced. They will continue to fight for justice and recognition, and they will never forget their loved ones who were taken from them.

Nadia’s journey also highlighted the importance of healing and closure for survivors of conflict and violence. It is a reminder that while the scars of war may never fully heal, it is important to find ways to honor and remember those we have lost.

As Nadia returned to her new home in Germany, she carried with her the memories of her brothers and the strength to continue her advocacy work. Her journey back to Iraq was a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of the human spirit, and a testament to the power of love and family.

Nadia Murad’s story is one of courage, resilience, and hope. She has shown the world that even in the face of unimaginable tragedy, there is always a glimmer of light that can guide us through the darkness. And as she continues to fight for justice and recognition for her people, she carries with her the love and memory of her brothers, Elias and Jalo, who will always be with her in spirit.
