Lane Kiffin has always been known for his strategic mind and his ability to break down complex situations and turn them into successes. From leading Ole Miss to their most successful run in program history to redefining his own health through yoga and sobriety, Kiffin is always studying, analyzing, and improving. But perhaps one of his greatest challenges has been navigating the real world, with all its ups and downs, while still maintaining his focus and drive.
For Kiffin, life is like a game movie. He approaches it with the same level of intensity and dedication as he does coaching a football team. And just like in a game, he is always looking for ways to improve and come out on top.
One of the biggest challenges Kiffin has faced in recent years is the loss of his father, Monte Kiffin. Monte was a legendary defensive coordinator in the NFL and a huge influence on Lane’s career. When Monte passed away in 2019, it was a devastating blow for Kiffin. But surprisingly, he didn’t regret his father’s death due to a decision he had made four years prior.
In 2015, Kiffin made the difficult decision to leave his position as offensive coordinator at Alabama to become the head coach at Florida Atlantic University. Many questioned this move, as it meant leaving a highly successful program for a smaller school. But for Kiffin, it was a chance to prove himself and build his own legacy.
At the time, his father was not in the best health and Kiffin knew he might not have much time left with him. So instead of regretting his decision to leave Alabama, Kiffin focused on making the most of the time he had left with his father. He even brought Monte on as a defensive analyst at FAU, giving them the opportunity to work together and bond during his father’s final years.
Looking back, Kiffin has no regrets about his decision. In an interview with ESPN, he said, “I wouldn’t change it, because we wouldn’t have had those four years together. I wouldn’t have gotten to coach with him. I wouldn’t have gotten to have him around the players. I wouldn’t have gotten to have him around my kids.”
This decision not only allowed Kiffin to spend quality time with his father, but it also helped him grow as a coach and leader. Monte’s presence and guidance at FAU were invaluable to Kiffin, and he credits his father for helping him become a better coach and a better person.
But Kiffin’s challenges didn’t stop there. In 2016, he went through a very public divorce with his ex-wife, Layla Kiffin. This could have been a distraction for Kiffin, but instead, he used it as an opportunity to grow and learn from his mistakes. He focused on becoming a better father to his three children and building a positive relationship with his ex-wife.
And just when he thought life couldn’t throw him any more curveballs, his brother, Chris Kiffin, joined his coaching staff at Ole Miss. This added a new dynamic to their relationship, as they had never worked together before. But Kiffin embraced the opportunity to have his brother by his side, and they have since formed a strong and successful partnership at Ole Miss.
Through all of these challenges, Kiffin has remained focused and determined. He has applied the same principles of studying and breaking down situations to his personal life, and it has paid off. He has become a better coach, a better father, and a better person because of it.
But perhaps the most inspiring aspect of Kiffin’s journey is his commitment to his health and well-being. In recent years, he has turned to yoga and sobriety to improve his physical and mental health. He has found balance and inner peace through these practices, and it has had a positive impact on all aspects of his life.
Kiffin’s journey in the real world may be filled with challenges, but he approaches them with the same determination and focus as he does on the football field. He is constantly learning, growing, and improving, and it has led him to great success in his personal and professional life.
As Kiffin continues to lead Ole Miss through their most successful run in program history, he serves as an inspiration to us all. He shows us that with hard work, dedication, and a positive mindset, we can overcome any challenge that life throws our way. And in the end, we will come out
