Illinois recommends masks in health care settings as respiratory infections climb

The Rise in Respiratory Illnesses Prompts Illinois Department of Public Health to Urge Use of Masks

In response to an increasing number of respiratory infections, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recently released guidance suggesting the use of masks in certain areas of health care facilities.

The week ending Nov. 25, 2019 showed a 20% increase in hospitalizations related to respiratory viruses, such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV. Of the 102 counties in Illinois, 44 of them, including Kankakee County in the Chicago area, registered high levels of hospitalizations.

As a result, IDPH is suggesting state-wide health care settings consider implementing mask policies, especially when caring for those with weakened immune systems. Under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations, facilities should consider instituting universal mask policies during higher levels of COVID-19, either on an entire facility level, in areas of higher risk, or for certain patient populations.

Even when masks are not mandated by a facility, individuals should wear masks or respirators according to their own judgement, considering their recent activities and potential for developing severe disease.

At this time, it is unknown if any health care facilities in Chicago have announced a mask policy due to the increase in respiratory illnesses.

Dr. Sameer Vohra, director of the IDPH, advises citizens to follow certain protocols in order to protect themselves and their families. This includes wearing masks in crowded places, practicing good hand hygiene, and getting vaccinated against COVID-19, the flu, and RSV if eligible. Vohra also encourages parents and caregivers to protect young children, noting the limited pediatric ICU capacity in many areas of the state.

While the rise in respiratory illnesses is concerning, it is important to remember that precautionary measures, such as wearing masks, can drastically reduce the spread of these illnesses. IDPH urges health care facilities to prioritize the safety of their patients by actively considering mask policies, and all individuals to practice diligence in protecting themselves and others.

By following the guidance of health officials and taking simple measures to protect ourselves and our community, we can better navigate through this difficult time.
