Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced on Monday that the city’s police chief, Pamela Smith, will be stepping down from her position. The mayor praised Chief Smith’s dedication and service to the city, while also expressing her confidence in the department’s ability to continue serving the community.
In a statement released by the mayor’s office, Mayor Bowser said, “I want to thank Chief Smith for her tireless commitment to the safety and well-being of our residents. She has been a true leader in our police department and has made significant strides in building trust and strengthening relationships with the community.”
Chief Smith, who has served as the city’s police chief since January 2021, has been a trailblazer in her role. She was the first woman to hold the position and also the first African American woman to lead the department. During her tenure, Chief Smith implemented several initiatives aimed at improving community relations, such as the “Neighborhood Engagement Achieves Results” program, which focused on building partnerships between the police and local residents.
Under Chief Smith’s leadership, the city has seen a decrease in crime rates and an increase in community engagement. She has also been instrumental in promoting diversity and inclusion within the department, leading to a more representative and inclusive police force.
Mayor Bowser also announced that Assistant Chief Robert Contee III will be taking over as the interim police chief until a permanent replacement is named. Chief Contee has been with the department for over 30 years and has held various leadership positions, including overseeing the department’s patrol services and criminal investigations divisions.
“I have full confidence in Chief Contee’s ability to lead the department during this transition period,” said Mayor Bowser. “His experience and dedication to the city make him the ideal candidate to continue the great work that Chief Smith has started.”
Chief Smith’s departure comes at a critical time for the city’s police department. With ongoing calls for police reform and accountability, the department will need strong and capable leadership to navigate these challenges. However, Mayor Bowser is confident that the department will continue to serve the community effectively.
“Our city is fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented police force,” said Mayor Bowser. “I am confident that under Chief Contee’s leadership, the department will continue to uphold its commitment to public safety and community engagement.”
Chief Smith’s resignation has been met with mixed reactions from the community. While some have expressed disappointment over her departure, many have also praised her for her efforts in improving community-police relations.
In a tweet, the mayor’s office shared a quote from Chief Smith, where she said, “I am proud of the work we have accomplished during my time as chief, and I am confident that the department will continue to make progress under new leadership.”
Chief Smith’s departure marks the end of an era for the city’s police department, but it also opens up new opportunities for growth and progress. As the search for a new police chief begins, the city remains committed to its goal of creating a safe and inclusive community for all its residents.
