Delaware State Police say DMV gunman let customers leave, fired at approaching officers

Investigators have revealed new details about the tragic shooting that took place at a Delaware State Police DMV office on Wednesday. According to authorities, the suspect, a 26-year-old man, allowed customers to leave the building before opening fire on approaching officers, ultimately resulting in the death of a trooper.

The incident occurred at the DMV office in New Castle, Delaware, where the suspect had gone to obtain a driver’s license. Witnesses reported that the man had been acting erratically and causing a disturbance before the shooting took place. The trooper, who has been identified as 32-year-old Corporal Stephen J. Ballard, was responding to the disturbance when he was shot multiple times by the suspect.

Despite being critically injured, Corporal Ballard was able to radio for help before being rushed to the hospital. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away. The suspect, who has not been identified, was also killed in the exchange of gunfire with other responding officers.

The news of Corporal Ballard’s death has sent shockwaves through the community and law enforcement agencies across the state. He was a highly respected and dedicated trooper who had been with the Delaware State Police for eight and a half years. He leaves behind a wife and a five-month-old daughter.

In a press conference, Delaware State Police Superintendent Colonel Nathaniel McQueen Jr. described Corporal Ballard as a “hero” and a “true professional.” He also praised the quick response of the other officers who put their lives on the line to protect the public and bring the suspect to justice.

The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing, but authorities have revealed that the suspect had a lengthy criminal record and was wanted on multiple warrants. It is believed that he had a history of mental health issues and had been previously known to law enforcement.

The tragic events of Wednesday have once again highlighted the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day while serving and protecting their communities. It is a reminder of the sacrifices that these brave men and women make to keep us safe.

In the wake of this senseless act of violence, the community has come together to show their support for Corporal Ballard and his family. A memorial has been set up outside the Delaware State Police headquarters, and a GoFundMe page has been created to support his wife and daughter.

Governor John Carney has also ordered all flags in the state to be flown at half-staff in honor of Corporal Ballard. In a statement, he said, “We are all saddened by the loss of Corporal Ballard, who served our state with selflessness and dedication. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow troopers during this difficult time.”

The shooting at the DMV office has left a community in mourning and a family without a husband and father. But it has also brought to light the bravery and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers. We must never forget the risks they take every day to keep us safe and honor their service and dedication. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Corporal Ballard and the Delaware State Police during this difficult time.
