The Food Guy: Bronzeville restaurant owner embraces family’s past

As we celebrate Black History Month, it is important to recognize and honor the contributions of black entrepreneurs and their impact on our culture. One such entrepreneur is Kristen Ashley, the owner and founder of Cleo’s Southern Cuisine. With deep roots in the Deep South, Cleo’s pays tribute to Ashley’s grandmother and her Mississippi heritage, while also being located in a South Side neighborhood with its own rich history.

Located in the Bronzeville neighborhood, Cleo’s Southern Cuisine has been serving up delicious Southern comfort food for the past couple of years. Ashley, who also has a location in the Loop for weekday lunches, takes inspiration from her grandmother’s hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi to create a menu full of classic southern dishes.

When it comes to fried chicken, Cleo’s does not disappoint. The chicken is seasoned with a combination of buttermilk and hot sauce before being breaded and fried in shortening. This method results in a perfectly crispy and juicy chicken that is sure to satisfy any craving. The same goes for their catfish, which is aggressively seasoned, breaded, and fried until golden brown. And let’s not forget about the corn muffin, which is served with a unique twist of vanilla extract and honey. It’s the perfect accompaniment to any of Cleo’s fried dishes.

But fried food isn’t the only thing on the menu at Cleo’s. Their mac and cheese is a must-try for any cheese lover. Made with cavatappi pasta and a blend of cheddar, cottage, and Monterey Jack cheeses, this dish is a true southern comfort food. And Ashley’s secret ingredient? Cottage cheese. It adds a unique tanginess to the dish that sets it apart from any other mac and cheese you may have tried.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet, Cleo’s has got you covered. Their sweet potatoes are topped with a delicious mixture of white and brown sugar, vanilla extract, and pineapple. The tartness of the pineapple perfectly balances out the sweetness of the dish, making it a must-try for any sweet tooth. And for those who can’t resist a classic combination of chicken and waffles, Cleo’s serves up a mouth-watering version with a touch of honey and powdered sugar.

But the star of the dessert menu at Cleo’s is the chocolate-pecan bread pudding. Served warm out of the oven, it is the ultimate indulgence. And with a neighborhood that continues to grow and thrive, Cleo’s has become a popular spot for those looking for a delicious meal in a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere.

For Ashley, opening Cleo’s in her childhood neighborhood was an easy decision. “I grew up just five blocks from the restaurant,” she says. “When this space became available, I felt like my grandmother was speaking to me. I knew I had to jump on this opportunity.” And it’s clear that she made the right choice, as Cleo’s has become a beloved spot for both locals and visitors.

Not only does Cleo’s offer delicious food, but it also plays a role in the community’s growth and development. With new construction in the area, there are plenty of new faces looking for a taste of the South. “To be a part of that on a grassroots level was super important to me,” says Ashley.

So if you’re looking for a taste of the Deep South right here in Chicago, head over to Cleo’s Southern Cuisine. Their Bronzeville location offers dinner on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, while their Loop location is open for weekday lunches.
