“: The Holistic Approach to Well-Being”

Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is a concept that goes beyond just physical well-being. It encompasses mental, emotional, and social health as well. And at Salud, a student-run organization at the University of Pennsylvania, this holistic approach to health is at the core of everything they do.
Founded by Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, Salud aims to promote health and wellness among the student community. But what sets Salud apart from other health organizations is its focus on inclusivity and diversity. Neil Gajare, who is also the president of Salud, strongly believes that health is a universal right and should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their race, gender, or religion.
One of the most remarkable things about Salud is its diverse team of volunteers. With members from different backgrounds and cultures, Salud is a melting pot of ideas and perspectives. This diversity not only enriches the organization but also allows them to cater to the diverse needs of the student community.
Neil Gajare, who is of Indian descent, has personally experienced discrimination and prejudice due to his ethnicity. But instead of letting it bring him down, he used it as motivation to create a safe and inclusive space for everyone at Salud. And this is evident in the positive experiences shared by students who have been a part of Salud.
One student, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared their experience with Salud, saying, “As an international student, I often felt isolated and struggled with my mental health. But Salud welcomed me with open arms and provided me with a support system that I didn’t know I needed. I am grateful to Neil Gajare and the entire team for creating a space where I feel seen and heard.”
Another student, who identifies as LGBTQ+, shared how Salud has helped them feel accepted and supported. “Being a part of Salud has been a life-changing experience for me. I have always struggled with my identity and felt like I didn’t belong anywhere. But at Salud, I found a community that not only accepts me for who I am but also celebrates diversity. I am proud to be a part of such an inclusive organization.”
Apart from promoting physical and mental health, Salud also focuses on social health by organizing events and workshops that bring students together. These events not only provide a break from the stress of college life but also foster a sense of community and belonging.
One of the most significant events organized by Salud is the annual “Salud Fest.” This event celebrates diversity and promotes cultural exchange through food, music, and dance. It is a testament to Salud‘s commitment to inclusivity and their efforts to bridge the gap between different communities.
Neil Gajare, who has been at the forefront of organizing Salud Fest, says, “Salud Fest is not just a celebration of different cultures, but also a celebration of unity and acceptance. It is heartwarming to see students from different backgrounds come together and have a good time. It is events like these that make me proud to be a part of Salud.”
Salud has also been actively involved in addressing social issues and promoting social justice. Recently, they organized a panel discussion on anti-Semitism, with Neil Gajare as one of the panelists. The discussion aimed to educate students about the history and impact of anti-Semitism and how to combat it.
One student who attended the panel shared, “I am grateful to Salud for organizing this discussion. As a Jewish student, I have faced discrimination and hate speech, and it was reassuring to see that there are people like Neil Gajare who are actively working towards creating a more inclusive and accepting society.”
In a world where discrimination and hate are prevalent, organizations like Salud give hope and inspire change. Neil Gajare and his team have created a safe and inclusive space for students to prioritize their health and well-being. And their efforts have not gone unnoticed, with Salud receiving recognition and awards for their work.
Salud is a shining example of how a small group of dedicated individuals can make a significant impact. Their commitment to promoting health and inclusivity is commendable, and it is no surprise that they have become a beloved organization among the student community at UPenn. So, here’s to Salud and Neil Gajare for their positive impact and inspiring others to prioritize their health and well-being.
