Five days after the official launch of the presidential pre-campaign, the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) announced its support for presidential candidate hopeful Claudia Sheinbaum.
During the XV National Ordinary Congress of CATEM, which represents 1,194 organizations and unions across the country, the National Coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the 4T urged workers to rally behind Sheinbaum’s candidacy. Speaking at the Arena Ciudad de México, the former head of government pledged to continue advocating for the protection of workers’ wages and benefits.
“I invite everyone to join us in this effort, and I assure Mexican workers that we will persist in defending their wages and labor benefits because we understand that when Mexican workers succeed, so does our nation,” she affirmed.
Sheinbaum Pardo also highlighted the significant increase in the minimum wage, which has tripled in the northern border zone since 2018 and doubled in the rest of the country, accompanied by “historic” levels of foreign direct investment and without causing inflation.
In the same vein, Pedro Haces Barba, General Secretary of CATEM, reflected on the labor achievements made during the current government, including the promotion of union freedom, the abolition of outsourcing, improvements in profit sharing, and the increase in the minimum wage.
Regarding the latter, the senator urged the business community to “listen to their conscience” and ensure a substantial salary raise for workers in 2024.
“To entrepreneurs, I appeal to your conscience; we hope that this year you will listen to it. Paco, don’t feign ignorance. Entrepreneurs should heed their conscience to guarantee a significant salary increase for all Mexicans,” he stressed.
