Trump’s War

In his 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised to be a President of peace. He vowed to end America's involvement in foreign conflicts and focus on rebuilding the nation. However, as his term comes to an end, it is clear that he has not lived up to his promise. In fact, he has done the opposite and has drawn the U.S. into the kind of conflict he long pledged to avoid. During his campaign, Trump criticized the U.S. involvement in wars in the Middle East, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan. He promised to bring our troops home and put an end to endless wars. He even went as far as to say that he was the only candidate who could prevent the U.S. from getting involved in another war. This message resonated with many Americans who were tired of seeing their loved ones sent off to fight in foreign lands. However, once in office, Trump's actions did not match his words. He increased the number of troops in Afghanistan and sent more troops to Iraq and Syria. He also authorized a military strike on Syria in response to a chemical attack, despite previously criticizing President Obama for considering similar action. These actions not only contradicted his campaign promises but also showed a lack of consistency and clear foreign policy strategy. But perhaps the most significant and concerning example of Trump's failure to live up to his promise of peace is his handling of the Iran nuclear deal. In 2018, he unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from the deal, despite the fact that it was working and had the support of our allies. This move not only jeopardized the stability of the region but also put the U.S. on a path towards a potential war with Iran. Furthermore, Trump's decision to order the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in January 2020 further escalated tensions between the two countries. This move was met with widespread criticism and sparked fears of a full-blown war. It also showed a lack of understanding of the consequences of such actions and the potential for further conflict.
